Nux Frequently Asked Questions
What is the active ingredient in Nux?
The active ingredient in Nux is “Nux Vomica”. It’s a terrible sounding name, but its name comes from Latin, meaning, “Poison Nut”. Nux Vomica is a homeopathic remedy prepared from the seeds of the Strychnos (yes, strychnine like the poison) Nux Vomica tree. It is a medium sized tree that grows to a height of 40-45 feet, with a short, crooked, thick trunk, and is native to Sri Lanka and India. The Indians have used the seeds in folk medicine for thousands of years. The seeds from the tree are ground to a powder and then diluted way, way down until it reaches a dilution making it suitable as a homeopathic remedy, which is very, very diluted – to the point of almost nothing left. Nux Vomica is a very popular homeopathic remedy that has been used safely for the past 200 years.
How does Nux work?
Nux works a little bit like a vaccination. It’s like giving your body a little bit of the problem so that it can better handle the real problem. In other words it’s like giving an artificial disease to a natural disease. The two are so similar that when they come together they cancel each other out, and lessen or alleviate the symptoms. It’s the idea that a similar substance will cure a similar problem – “Like Cures Like” or in Latin “Similia Similibus Curentur”.
What exactly will Nux do for me?
Nux is best at relieving some very acute, uncomfortable symptoms associated with overindulgence of alcohol and food. Common symptoms particularly associated with Nux are hangover with a headcache, nausea, vomiting, groggy, listless, chilliness, irritiability and sensitivity to light and noise.
Will Nux keep me from getting drunk?
No. Nux will ABSOLUTELY NOT help keep you from becoming intoxicated or feeling intoxicated. Nux works best for relieving the discomforts of nausea, headaches and vomiting that are associated with intoxication and hangover.
Is it safe?
Doctors and homeopathic practitioners in the US and all over the world have been prescribing Nux Vomica and thousands of other homeopathic remedies for the last 200 years with rarely any side effects. Homeopathic remedies are used by millions of people everyday around the world.
What if I'm taking a prescription?
One great thing about Nux is that it will not interact with any prescription medication or pain killers.
What if I take too much?
The beauty of Nux, is that you really can't take too much. If it isn’t the right remedy nothing will happen. They are so diluted that you would need to ingest many, many pellets to get any real physical discomfort from having too much Nux Vomica. Yet, it is still amazingly effective at relieving horrible hangover symptoms in the recommended dosage.
Can I take it on an empty stomach?
Yes, it is preferred that you take Nux on an empty stomach, or at least 15 minutes before or after ingesting food or beverage. But its ok to take Nux whenever you need it. Just let it dissolve completely in your mouth (under the tongue is best).
I’ve never heard of Homeopathy, what is this stuff?
Homeopathy is a system of medicine founded in Europe in the early 1800’s. It utilizes natural substances from the animal, vegetable and mineral kingdoms in a highly diluted form to treat disease. It became quite popular as it performed extremely well in epidemics that raged throughout Europe at the time. It was championed by royalty and the upper class. Homeopathy came to Western shores in the mid 1800’s and by the turn of the century 25% of all doctors were homeopaths. There were 100 Homeopathic hospitals in the United States and over 2000 homeopathic pharmacies. It was popular because it effectively treated problems without causing any side effects. In 1938 the HPUS, or Homeopathic Pharmacopeia of the United States became protected by the FDA, giving the manufacture of homeopathy strict standards and safety guidelines. With the rise and success of modern pharmaceutical medicine and western medical philosophy in the 20th century homeopathy became unpopular. However, as people began to seek out less harmful ways to heal, homeopathy began a renaissance in the 1960’s that continues to this day. Worldwide, Homeopathy is incredibly popular and is the 2nd most popular and prescribed medicine, behind herbs and in front of western pharmaceuticals.
